Bloggers, beware of hoax SMSes!

The next time you blog or send comments on any social networking sites, beware that your activities are being monitored. Comments or blogs wherein topics concerning public interest and could lead or cause panic amongst people and affect the law and order situation in the city will be dealt with strictly and police action would be initiated against the people involved.

The recent case wherein film maker Raj Kaushal, who is also husband of actress and anchor Mandira Bedi, is under investigation by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of Mumbai police for posting messages regarding damages caused in Bandra Worli sea link and avoid using it.

Kaushal and few others are under investigation for posting the message through a famous micro blogging sites. The messages were further propagated throughout the cyber space and the topic became talk of the town. Many people who came to know about it believed that some damage had been happened to the sea link and also took other routes to travel on that day.

The construction company HCC which has constructed the sea link further filed a case with the CCIC and action was initiated against people who had been found propagating the message.

Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy said, “Propagating such hoaxes which could be detrimental to public and further cause panic situations would be dealt very strictly. If anyone does that it could also lead to major problems like riots or affect the law and order. People propagating such messages through social networking sites or any other electronic form would be booked under various sections of IT Act and such messages propagated through SMSes or any other form would be booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.”

Few months ago, a message was similarly circulated wherein it said that two people had been brutally murdered at Khar. Police officials checked at Khar and all nearby areas and finally came to know that there was no such incident anywhere.

Similarly messages carrying names of some contact persons number and incidents like  serious crimes have been circulated through mobile SMSes, when contacted the person whose number is provided comes out to be some senior police officer who has no idea about the case.
