The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a ‘say no to plastic’ campaign in Andheri and Juhu to raise awareness among residents about the ill effects of plastic bags on the environment.

BJP workers visited homes in the area and asked people to use cloth bags instead of plastic bags. The workers even gave away cloth bags, manufactured by the party, to residents.

Amit Satam, general secretary, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, said: “The BMC has banned plastic bags below 50 microns. We are trying to convince people that plastic bags are hazardous.”

He added that the campaign had been launched as per the party’s policies. “Our leaders made it a point to make people aware about global warming at the party’s national conclave in Indore. We all are aware that conservation of environment will be a major socio-political issue in the days to come, especially in a rapidly growing city like Mumbai, which is the centre of industry and major construction projects,” Satam said.

The BJP had last year also released a documentary — Vasundhara — in Hindi to create awareness about global warming. The documentary featured big names like Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Hema Malini, Kunal Kapoor and Ajay Devgn.
