A bike ride back home from her fiance’s house on Friday proved fatal for a teenager after a speeding dumper knocked her down, killing her instantly.

According to the police, Lata Patil, 18, a teacher, was riding pillion with fiance Naresh Londhe, 23, when the dumper rammed into their bike near Meghraj Marble at Vile Parle (East).

The victims were rushed to VN Desai hospital where Patil was declared dead before admission and Londhe was discharged after first aid.

The dumper driver Abdul Shaikh, 48, abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Hours after the incident, the police traced Shaikh to his residence in Laxmi Nagar Society hutments in Chembur.
The Vile Parle police booked Shaikh on charges of death due to negligence and rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code.

“We recovered the vehicle papers which helped us ascertain Shaikh’s whereabouts,” said an investigating officer.

Londhe told the police that Shaikh had been following his bike on the Western Express highway and then suddenly attempted to overtake him without any signal, causing the accident.
