Anna Hazare's recent 13-day fast has become an object of study and discussion in a city B-school.

Two professors of the city-based Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Kaushik Mukherjee and Rajesh Panda, led by their director, Vivek Sane, have actually compiled a case study titled 'Anna Hazare's movement based on principles of Satyagraha: What's the relevance for business managers?'

The SIBM professors felt that Hazare's movement gave light to large number of managerial skills that is a must for effective management.

"The mass agitation showed us how the entire nation responded to one person's call. This is definitely one criterion that an excellent manager needs to possess. This particular aspect was sufficient enough to trigger us to come up with a case study on the crusader," Sane told DNA.

The case study will be used for class discussions among SIBM students.

Explaining the case study, Panda said there are various lessons that can be derived from Hazare and the agitation, which might help a manager develop his managerial skills in the corporate world.

"The mission, operations, communications, enrollment, marketing, motivation and customer service of the movement were executed in such a manner that it served as a perfect handbook for budding managers to employ in the corporate world," Panda said.

The professors told DNA that the collective work of three-and-a-half-weeks and interactions with at least six participants who took part in the agitation served as the base data for their case study.

The SIBM team said that the demographic representation of Hazare's movement, a detailed synopsis of the struggle for Jan Lokpal Bill and the past struggles led by Hazare have also been incorporated in the case study.

The case study throws light on various facets of the struggle like the use of Gandhi cap, national flag and the media. Mukherjee said that a good manager should know how to use various available tools in an effective manner.

"Initially, none of us thought that the movement would take on such gigantic proportions. But with the government finally relenting, we realised how effectively Hazare used the tools available to him to meet his goals. The objective is to draw lessons from these tools in reference to the corporate world," Mukherjee said.
