In his heart, he wants to become a political cartoonist like his father, Raj Thackeray. But for now, Amit Thackeray, son of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief, is keen on enrolling for the bachelor of management studies (BMS) course at Ruia College
in Matunga.

Both his father and his uncle, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray, had studied at the JJ School of Art.
Amit, too, appeared for this year’s arts entrance examination, conducted by the directorate of arts, Mumbai. He passed the exam, but failed to secure a seat at the JJ School of Art.

The entrance exam was held in the first week of June for admission to eight art colleges in the state, including the JJ School of Art, government colleges of arts in Nagpur and Aurangabad, and private institutes like Rachana Sansad College in Mumbai.

A JJ school source said, “Raj’s son (Amit) appeared for the entrance exam, and scored above 60%. He had his centre in our college. He definitely is good at drawing; otherwise he would not have qualified in the entrance exam.

“However, he did not fill up the option form. Any student qualifying in the entrance exam has to fill it up for the centralised admission process rounds.” The admissions to the art colleges got over
last week.

A senior official said that admissions to the applied arts section of the JJ school closed at 84% this year, and Amit scored way
below it.

“He did not score enough marks to clinch a place at JJ, but as a qualifier he would have got a seat in anyone of the other colleges,” he said.

The entrance exam has several components, including a drawing on nature/object, design, thematic memory drawing and general knowledge questions.

The theme for this year’s memory drawing was Maharashtra Day.

A source in the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena said that Amit might take admission for BMS at Ruia College.

The boy did his class XII in commerce from the Podar College of Commerce and Economics, also in Matunga.
