To boost the family welfare program in the city, the BMC has decided to start post-placental delivery, 10 minutes intrauterine contraception devices (IUCD) in the maternity homes. For this, the BMC is going to train the aayahs and nurses to convince the woman in the labour room.

Dr Asha Advani, special officer, BMC’s family welfare department said, “It is very easy to convince the woman for IUCD, soon after the delivery, as she is exhausted and willing. This ensures there is no unwanted pregnancy during the breast feeding period.” The post placental delivery 10 minutes IUCD was introduced as a pilot project in Sion hospital and JJ hospital few months back. “The pilot project has been running successfully. The success rate is 96%,” said Dr Advani.

Presently the department is training the aayahs and nurses for the program. Dr Advani said, “Many women are not aware about IUCD. Nurses and the aayahs play an important role as they spend more time with the patient, so they can convince the patient better.”

Head of the gynaecology department of JJ Hospital, Dr Rekha Davar said that earlier, IUCDs could prevent pregnancy for three to five years. Now, they provide protection for as many as 10 years.

Meanwhile, the BMC is also thinking to review its sterilisation program after it saw a dip in 2010, when it registered 1,462 male vasectomy cases while in 2009 there were 3,501 cases.

The BMC in 2010 had a target of 2,773 male vasectomies. To popularise the non-scalpel vasectomy among the elite, the BMC also included private practitioners. It had accredited nearly 300 doctors for the same.

“We get men were from the upper middle-class. Most people from the upper middle-class shy away from civic centres and so we want to train private practitioners and accredit them to perform the operations,” said Dr Advani.
