Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s (MSRTC) buses seem to be having a rough week. While the episode of Santosh Mane’s death race last Wednesday is still fresh in people’s mind, another accident involving an MSRTC bus took place on the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Talegaon on Sunday night leaving 22 people injured.

At 5pm on Sunday, an MSRTC passenger bus (MH20 BL 0292) had left from Alibaug to Pune. As soon as it reached near Talegaon Khind area at around 8.45pm, the bus driver banged a trolley from behind. He had to apply an emergency brake due to which a tanker following the bus hit it and lead to the pile-up. Total 22 people, mostly bus passengers, got injured. Injured victims were taken to Pawana Hospital. Bus driver Nivrutti Bhambire (53) and tanker driver Ramchandra Yadav (26) were among the injured.

“A trolley carrying sugarcane was also going towards Pune which the driver could not see and he banged it from behind,” assistant sub inspector, Chandrashekhar Dalvi of Talegaon Dabhade police station, said.

“Bhambire has got a jaw injury and could not speak, while the tanker driver got his leg injured,” Dalvi said.

Most of the victims were sent home after minor treatment by the hospital authrities. Dr Satyajeet Wadhokar, chief executive director of Pawana Hospital, told DNA, “Yadav had to undergo a surgery for his leg injury. Most of the victims who came to the hospital were passengers and they had nose or jaw injuries.”

This is the third accident involving an MSRTC bus in last five days.
Earlier, on Sunday morning, another MSRTC bus on Dadar-Pune route had met with an accident near Patan on the expressway. The bus carrying 39 passengers was coming to Pune when the brakes of the bus failed and the driver took the bus in a ditch at the side of the road. Three passengers of the bus escaped with the minor injuries.
