With anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare preparing for his next showdown with the Central government on the Lokpal issue, his immediate family in Ralegan Siddhi is worried about the 74-year-old Gandhian crusader’s health.

Hazare, who is in the forefront of the historic Jan Lokpal movement, has planned his 3-day fast from December 27 in Mumbai. He has called for a three-day “jail bharo andolan” and has announced he would tour the five states prior to elections, to campaign against the political parties that have opposed the passage of a strong Lokpal bill.

Kaushalya, the daughter-in-law of the household, told DNA that ever since Hazare announced his fast, the family members were worried about the effect on the septuagenarian’s health.

“The fast in August had taken a heavy toll on his health. When Anna returned to the village after his fast in New Delhi, we could not control our tears, seeing his frail form,” she said.

In spite of the emotional upheaval, none in the family has dared to suggest to Hazare not to proceed on the fast. “None in the household or the village can go against the decision of Anna. Once he sets his mind on something, he achieves it at any cost,” she said.

In fact, such was the worry troubling the family that Hazare’s sisters, Parubai Pawar and Tarabai Narote, visited the household of his younger brother, Maruti, to discuss the matter. However, given Anna’s extremely busy schedule, the family members hardly get any time to talk to him freely.

“We visit Anna only after 8.30 pm, once everyone leaves. He enquires about our well-being. Other than urging him to take care of his health, we could not talk anything about his impeding fast and agitation,” she said.

Kaushalya and other members of the family have undertaken special vows to pray for the well-being of Hazare. Although worried about the possible impact on Hazare’s health, Kaushalya is confident of his victory.

“When he sets his mind on something he achieves it. If need be, he is ready to sacrifice his life also for the cause of a strong Lokpal,” she said.
