Anna fast: Supporters on hunger strike in Sangli, Kolhapur

Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana MP from Hatkanangale, Raju Shetty, on Tuesday staged a daylong hunger strike in front of the collector’s office in Sangli to protest against the arrest of the anti-corruption crusader, Anna Hazare, in New Delhi.

Shetty and his 50 supporters gathered near the collector’s office in Sangli and shouted anti-government slogans. Shetty termed Hazare’s arrest as “undemocratic.”

Activists of political organisations like Shiv Pratishthan and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gathered at Maruti Chowk in Sangli city and protested. The agitation was led by Sambhajirao Bhide, BJP MLA Suresh Khade, Hanmant Pawar and Prithviraj Pawar.

In Kolhapur, 450 activists of different social organisations formed a human chain from Bindu Chowk to Shivaji Chowk area to express solidarity with Hazare.

“We will ring bells in front of the collector’s office tomorrow,” a social organisation, Prajasattak’s president, Dilip Desai, said.
In Satara, 90 activists courted arrest during their protests across the city.
