Kicking off the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) campaign for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) polls on Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar launched a thinly-veiled attack on tainted city MP Suresh Kalmadi, who was recently released from Tihar Jail after being granted bail in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) scam.

Without taking any names, Pawar said, “To vote for a corrupt person is not Pune’s culture. So, everyone should be clear about who they are going to vote for in the civic election.”

In his 50-minute-long speech, Pawar, who is also the guardian minister of Pune, did not dwell on any new issue.

His entire thrust was on making an appeal to the citizens to give a clear mandate to the NCP.

Speaking about Kalmadi’s back-door entry in the municipal election, Pawar said, “The tainted Congress leader from Pune has shelved his plan to return to the city after some Congress leaders pointed out that it would prove detrimental for the party in the election.”

“Pune is a cultured city. So it has to decide who will it vote for — the party that will provide a transparent government or the party of a fraudster involved in the CWG scam?,” he asked.

Lambasting the Congress, which is the party’s ally at state level and its main opponent in the PMC, Pawar said, “Some Congressmen take pride in saying that their party is that of Jedhe-Jawalkar-More, but they have to look for answers when they are asked how it has become a party of fraudsters.”

Pawar said, “The NCP had to compromise on many public issues because it was running the government with the help of other parties, as it did not have a clear majority. Now it is time to elect the NCP with a clear majority so that it can push all pending projects and proposals.”

Taking a potshot at chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Pawar said, “Had we not pressed the Congress to approve the development plan for fringe areas, it would not have been passed yet.”
