Western Railway plans to buy a Rs14-crore comprehensive hi-tech security package that includes gadgets, vehicle scanners, X-ray machines and portable devices.
After Central Railway (CR), it is Western Railway’s (WR) turn to improve its security apparatus.
It plans to buy a Rs14-crore comprehensive hi-tech security package that includes gadgets, vehicle scanners, X-ray machines and portable devices.
Once these systems are in place, WR claims to make the city’s suburban train network one of the safest modes of public transport in the country.
CR had last month placed orders for hi-tech security equipment — including night-vision cameras, internet-based security surveillance, vapour detectors and bomb baskets — to protect commuters on Mumbai’s vulnerable suburban railway system. The order was worth Rs27.49 crore.
The integrated security system will have five basic elements, including Internet Protocol-based video surveillance system, access control system, personal and baggage screening systems, bomb detection and disposal system and system integration.
Major stations like Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Borivli would be covered under the package. Once suburban trains start plying to Dahanu, the network will be extended.
“The WR package will cost about Rs14.7 crore, half that the price of CR’s network. It would include supply, installation, system integration, testing and commissioning
of integrated security system, comprising CCTV surveillance system, access control (automatic vehicle scanner), personal and baggage screening system, with comprehensive maintenance service for three years,” a senior security official added.
The ministry of railways had planned both these integrated security packages in last year’s budget follow-ing the 26/11 terror attacks and the 11/7 serial train blasts on WR.
