The city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fell short of the numbers needed to be in power at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and also appears to be on the verge of losing the post of leader of opposition to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), wants its corporators to utilise budgetary provisions and powers of various committees to implement the party’s agenda.

Considering the number of first-time corporators, the party conducted a day-long training programme on the functioning of the civic body, at a hotel in Kothrud on Saturday. While the pupils were the party’s 13 newly-elected corporators, the teachers were the bigwigs of the party and former municipal officers.

While addressing the gathering, standing committee chairman Ganesh Bidkar said, “All the promises made to the citizens must be reflected in the annual budget of the PMC.” To take care of the ward and do sustainable development work, the corporators need to have a five-year plan for development of the ward, he added.
Explaining the functioning of the standing committee, Bidkar told the corporators that it was not possible for everyone to be a part of the standing committee, but they could contribute to the city’s development through other committees such as tree authority and education board.

“There are many public welfare schemes for the urban poor, and they should be used for getting the work done and follow ups with PMC officials,” Bidkar said.

He also urged the corporators to prepare a list of priority works so that it can be included in the annual budget for 2012-13. Earlier in the day, MLA Bhimrao Tapkir inaugurated the training programme which was followed by a session on PMC administration.
Party’s city unit chief, Vikas Mathkari, spoke to the corporators about various problems in the city.
