Twenty-something-IT professionals got a hands-on water colours tutorial from a 90-year-old artist at their office in Koregaon Park on
Saturday.

Pune-based, Captain (retd) AV Rowe (90), a World War II veteran had the IT professionals from the Koregaon Park-based Extentia Information Technology company mesmerised by every stroke emanating from his paint brush.

Rowe lost his hearing while fighting the Burma war in a tank regiment. The Indian government refused to give him pension, as they said he had served the British Army. However, instead of losing hope and courage, Rowe took to painting to earn his living.

“I lost my hearing capacity due to a mortar blast in the war against Burma. A complete silence prevailed in my life. I took to advertising and copy writing as a vocation but could do nothing after office hours. This is when I spent hours in the lap of nature admiring it. Gradually, one day I started portraying it on canvas,’’ he said.

Luckily for Rowe, he regained his hearing following a specialised surgery abroad some 22 years after the war. Rowe has been painting for the last 40 years and is living in Pune for the last 70 years.

Rowe’s paintings are mostly inspired by nature and he paints only landscapes. You will not find any human figure in his paintings. “I feel each tree has its own personality, so there is no need of the human element in any landscape. After studying about 2,500 trees, I came to a conclusion that human beings always destroy nature, so I never include them in my painting,’’ said Rowe who likes using ultra-marine blue in his paintings.

Neha Shira, an Extentia employee who participated in the workshop said, “We got to know the minute details of painting, as how to spread the water, mix and match colour and suppress the white background. It was a great learning experience.’’
