50% of new college proposals may fall

Though the higher and technical education department has received 295 proposals for the sanction of new senior colleges, nearly half of them do not even comply with basic requisites for the same. With the number of incomplete or inappropriate applications being more, the total of the sanctioned colleges is also expected to reduce compare to last year.

According to the set criterion, the institutions applying for the new colleges need to have adequate land, infrastructure, and one-year old registration with the charity commissioner and adequate experience in the field besides facility of laboratory and adequate connectivity.

The institution either should have its own land or leased land for a specific amount of time. However, most of the applicants have not complied with the basic norms and are expected to be rejected while been scrutinised in the process.

Higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope had announced two weeks ago, that nearly 150 colleges are expected to be sanctioned this year. However, an official in Mantralaya said that the number will considerably go down.

“We have received nearly 100 applications from the Marathwada university and 74 from the Mumbai university. But the accuracy rate of the applications from the Marathwada university is poor and hence it may not be able to keep the higher rate of sanctioning of new colleges that was seen last year,” said the official.

The first list of the sanctioned colleges is expected to be announced by the end of the week, well within the June 15 deadline.
