On the occasion of Women’s Day, Aashay Film Club and Aayam Creations have organised a second film festival to celebrate the occasion from March 8 to 10.
On the occasion of Women’s Day, Aashay Film Club and Aayam Creations have organised a second film festival to celebrate the occasion from March 8 to 10. The festival was inaugurated on Tuesday at National Film Archive of India (NFAI) by noted poet Sudhir Moghe.
The theme this year is women and cinema. Five international and national award-winning movies from varied cultural and regional backgrounds will be screened. Aayam Creations, a group of women journalists from Pune, felicitated journalist and film critic, Rekha Deshpande. She was honoured with the first Aayam award by Moghe.
Deshpande spoke on the changing portrayal of women in Indian cinema and began with how male domination reflected in the movies in those days.
“I started my career in the ‘70s, when there were very few women journalists. Film journalism was also dominated by men. Even today, male domination can be seen in every field. But it is good to see women breaking the shackles and moving towards development,’’ she said.
Moghe said, “Women can be seen rising on the global platform. Aayam’s choice of presenting the first award to Rekha was good. I have been associated with her for many years and have also read her articles.’’
Virendra Chitrav of Aashay Film Club said, “Films are an effective medium. How the portrayal of women has changed in movies over the years is interesting to see and needs to reach the youth. Only then will our aim of organising such festivals will be fulfilled.’’
The Hindi film Mirch (Vinay Shukla) starring Konkana Sen Sharma, Raima Sen, Shreyas Talpade and Shahana Goswami was screened as the inaugural film.
The fest is open for all and seats will be given on a first-cum-first served basis.
