Although the police have so far failed to crack the Ghatkopar case where two constables were fired at, their efforts have lead to the solving of at least 35 other long-pending cases.

A similar ‘quirk of fate’ took place last year in June during the investigation of the serial rape-murder of minor girls in Nehru Nagar. The police had managed to solve over 126 cases other cases during the special drive started to crack the case.

In the wee hours of March 10, three unidentified robbers broke into BB Jewellers shop in the Pant Nagar area of Ghatkopar. While attempting to flee with ornaments worth over Rs8 lakh, they came face-to-face with two police constables on patrol duty who tried to stop them. The robbers, instead of trying to make a run for it, fired a round of bullets on them, before escaping in a waiting car. Although the police have identified the accused, they are yet to be traced.

The incident however, sent shockwaves among the public as well as the police, who formed special teams to crack the case. During investigation, police officials have detained and questioned hundreds of people with past criminal records. A police official said, “During the questioning, we discovered many had been involved in some other crimes which had gone undetected till then.”

According to police sources, the solved cases include theft, housebreaking, chain snatching, robbery, molestation, murder and other offenses.

The sources added that the cases were solved under the jurisdiction of Ghatkopar, Pant Nagar, Vikhroli, Kanjur Marg, Bhandup, Navghar and Parksite police stations. Cases pertaining to few other surrounding police stations have also been solved.
