25% water cut in South Mumbai, western suburbs

Ten days after the city faced a 90-hour water cut, citizens must ready themselves for a fresh round of water cuts for the next two days.

Parts of south Mumbai and the western suburbs will face a 25% slash in water supply till Tuesday. Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Navy Nagar, Nariman Point, Backbay Reclamation, Fort, Churchgate, Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road, Grant Road, Worli, Prabhadevi, Dadar, Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz, Andheri, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari and Goregaon are likely face the water pinch for the coming 48 hours.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced the water cut due to a major pipeline burst at the Upper Vaitarna pipeline on Sunday. A 12-inch bypass valve burst on the main water outlet at Sahar village in Andheri (East).

“The water valve was old and broke due to wear and tear. The valve will now be  replaced. Until then, affected areas will get water at low pressure and lesser supply,” said Ramesh Bhambale, chief engineer, hydraulic department, BMC.

Due to adequate water level in the catchment area in the six lakes supplying water to the city, no water cuts had been scheduled this year. But the tunnel project and pipeline bursts have made this the fourth round of water cuts in the last six months.

“We have initiated the work on a priority basis and it is slated to be completed by Monday midnight. We have kept emergency services of water tankers ready and have diverted water tankers from other wards to the affected wards,” added Bhambale.
