Two National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) scientists, Amol Arvindrao Kulkarni and Dattatraya H Dethe, have been selected as young associates of the Indian Academy of Sciences for 2011-14.

This programme, introduced in 1983, identifies and encourages promising young scientists. The associateship is tenable for a maximum period of five years until the age of 35, or a minimum period of three years.

Kulkarni, who is with the chemical engineering and process development division of the NCL, holds a PhD in chemical engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai and has done postdoctorate research at the Max Planck Institute, Magdeburg, Germany.

He is also recipient of CSIR Young Scientist Award for 2011.

Kulkarni’s areas of interest include microreactor technology, microfluidics, continuous flow synthesis and scale-up, understanding hydrodynamics of multiphase reactors and experimental fluid dynamics.

With the help of scientists from the organic chemistry division in NCL, he has developed continuous flow processes for the synthesis of high value pharmaceutical drugs and dyes with high process yields.

He has published 35 research papers in international peer reviewed journals. He has filed one world patent, four Indian patents and one design patent.

Dethe, also a recipient of CSIR Young Scientist Award for 2011, is with the organic chemistry division of the NCL. He works in the area of total syntheses of bioactive natural products.

He started a major research programme on the total synthesis of bioactive natural products and their simplified analogues for structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies and new drug discovery programme.

Dethe has 12 publications to his credit and has filed one patent. At present eight students are working with him.

Both these scientists have been invited to attend the 77th annual meeting of the academy to be held at Ahmedabad from November 18 to 20.
