A four-year-old girl and a year-old-boy were severely injured when a portion of a single storey building collapsed at Shanti Nagar in Dahisar (East) on Tuesday.

The girl, Shabina Sheikh, had gone out to purchase a pack of biscuits, while the boy, Kamlesh Waghel was playing outside his house when they were trapped beneath the debris.

Shabina suffered a fracture in both her right leg and arm and she also has severe head injuries. Waghel’s jaw was badly crushed and he also has major injuries on his face.

Three other people, Kamal Durgaram Sahasi, 28, Seema Raju Siddiqui, 23, and Maya Waghel, 21, were also hurt in the incident. The victims were rushed to Bhagwati hospital and Rohit Nursing Centre at Dahisar.

“Shabina had gone out to buy biscuits and while she was coming back from the shop the left portion of the house fell on her,” said Shahnaz Sheikh, her mother. The Sheikhs live in the house in front of one which fell. The top floor of the structure crashed down at around 10am. A majority of the residents were out filling water from the community tap, when the mishap occurred.

“The water supply starts around 9am. There was a long queue for filling water. Seema was near the tap when she got trapped under the debris,” Shahnaz added.

Fortunately the ground floor of the structure was locked and nobody was there. “We had shifted to this house only a day before the collapse. I now wish we had not done so,” said Kamal Sahasi, who lives on the first floor. The residents had added a mezzanine floor to the structure.

The area is cluttered with such dilapidated structures. NR Narkar, assistant municipal commissioner, said, “We will now check how many such illegal structures are there in the area. As for now, we have cleared the debris and have asked the people to remain careful.”
