The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started a stringent action against the unauthorised hawkers and roadside food stalls. On Saturday the BMC initiated action against 1300 hawkers which was the major action of this year at Mohammad Ali road.

To avoid health problems and others during the monsoon the BMC decided to take action against all illegal hawkers and roadside food stalls. During the week the BMC’s encroachment removal squad removed more than 2500 hawkers and made the footpath hawkers free. On Saturday the squad removed about 1,000 hawkers from the Mohammad Ali road, which is the busiest road with majority of the hawkers in south Mumbai. The BMC seized the goods of Rs5 lakh from the hawkers.

Action against the hawkers at Mohammad Ali Road is not easy as many times the hawkers attack the BMC’s squad. So the BMC had asked for protection from the local police. “The police had provided five platoons of police force. We carried the action under the police protection with 50 vehicles and 150 civic employees,” said Chandrashekhar Rokade, deputy municipal commissioner.

The BMC had taken a major action after three years against the illegal hawkers at Mohammad Ali Road.

“We will continue the action against them till all the major roads and station areas are free of all illegal hawkers, as it is a main obstacle on footpath and creates inconvenience to the pedestrians,” Rokade added. Meanwhile the same squad took action against 357 hawkers at Khar, Santa Cruz, Tata Hospital and Wadia Hospital (at Parel). In the action the BMC seized goods of Rs4.57 lakh. In last two months, action was taken against more than 6,000 hawkers and fine of over Rs1 crore was collected.
