The principal of KPB Hinduja College at Charni Road had to give a written apology for saying: “Who is Aditya Thackeray?” A student recorded Chitra Natrajan’s comments and informed the Yuva Sena about what she said. Yuva Sena members visited the college on Wednesday and created a ruckus.

Natrajan was opposed to restarting Nexus – an annual festival which was discontinued by her. The students then approached Yuva Sena to strengthen their case.

A simple remark about the Thackerays – the most powerful family in Mumbai – can land you in serious trouble. The principal of a top city college learnt this lesson the hard way when the Yuva Sena forced her to give a written apology for her “Who is Aditya Thackeray?” remark.

Chitra Natrajan, principal of KPB Hinduja College at Charni Road, reportedly made a remark against the Yuva Sena scion last week when students were saying that she must allow Nexus -- an annual festival – this year. Nexus was discontinued by her. As she got a hint that students had approached the Yuva Sena to strengthen their case, she reportedly warned the students to keep away from such tricks. One of the students allegedly recorded her remarks and gave it to the Yuva Sena. The matter immediately took a political turn.

Claiming to have a 30-minute video, core committee member of the Yuva Sena Rahul Khedekar said the principal’s remarks were offensive.

“The principal said Who is Aditya Thackeray? Is he running the College? She unnecessarily dragged our leader in the case besides threatening students to bar them from college if they approach the Yuva Sena,” claimed Khedekar.

Nexus was launched four years ago by Natrajan’s predecessor TA Shiware, who retired four months ago.

On Wednesday, they led a delegation to the college and created ruckus till she budged in and gave her apology in writing (dna has a copy) which also mentions that the festival would be conducted this year. It is unclear whether the management had forced her to give an apology or she did it herself to avoid a direct clash with the Shiv Sena.

However, the incident has shocked principals in the city. “This is an insult to an academician. How can a political party-led student union seek an apology in first place?” asked a principal.

When contacted, Natrajan said, “Yes, I gave a written apology as Yuva Sena members wanted it.”
When asked whether she did it under pressure from the management, she refused to comment.

“I have had enough. I don’t want to escalate the matter further. Everything is settled for now,” she said.
