Unlike her classmates, studying for long hours at a stretch in the run-up to the SSC exams was not an option for Sneha Ari (16). The Worli girl's health condition didn't allow her to sit with her books for barely an hour.

However, even blood cancer couldn't dampen the teenager's spirit. She managed to pass her exams with 66%.

Sneha Ari lives with her parents and two younger brothers who are in school. A student of Sacred Heart High School, her world came crashing down two years when she was diagnosed with the dreaded disease.

At that time, Sneha's condition had worsened. Over a period of time, she became stable. Sneha is still under medication and is required to visit hospital every now and then for treatment.

"Earlier, I used to visit the hospital every day, but now I go there twice a month. I have to take a lot of precautions in my day-to-day routine. Like other children, I could not sit continuously for studies as my body would start aching."

The girl said that she had to take a break after every half an hour. "I had expected to score better, but my illness did not allow me. I am happy with my scores and wish to pursue computer science. But since my score is less, I have also filled forms for commerce so thta I don't miss out on admissions." She said her school was very supportive.

Sneha's father Ashim left his job of supplying books to bookstores at malls two years ago to look after his daughter. "My youngest son is in St. Ignatius High school, while the other studies at Sacred Heart High School. Both the schools have reduced the fees considering my financial condition. I'm also grateful to my relatives for helping me in every possible way."

Ashim, who suffers from a disability in his right hand, said his family at present is surviving on charity. "I had applied for a telephone booth six months back. But I have not got any response so far. I am very proud that my daughter did so well despite of her illness. We have to be very cautious about her health or else, it may become serious."
