The Worli police are baffled in the suicide case of a 24-year-old diamond merchant, who jumped to his death from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Sunday evening. The youth's body was found on Monday at Worli jetty by the local fishermen, who informed the police.

With deceased Naresh Sancheti's family members saying there was no reason for him to kill himself, the police are clueless at the moment about what led him to take the extreme step. According to officers, Sancheti lived in Naveen Asha building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road in Dadar (East) with his parents, brothers, wife and daughter. He was the youngest of three brothers.

On Sunday around 5pm, Sancheti left home in his car to buy groceries. Around 5.30pm, he called up home and told his family members that the car had broken down on the sea link and someone should come and get it.

Senior inspector Sunil Jain said, "We received a call from policemen posted on the sea link that a red I10 was lying unattended. By the time our team reached there, Sancheti's cousin brother was also there. We immediately started a search operation below the bridge, but could not locate the body due to high tide."

"After the body was found at Worli jetty, we registered a case of accidental death. The cause of death, according to the post-mortem report, was drowning," he added.

The deceased's cousin Rakesh said, "We all are in a state of shock as we never expected this. We can't imagine why he would have done this... he had a beautiful family and was doing well in life."
Rakesh added that they will be scanning footage from the CCTV on the sea link to ascertain how it happened.
