On Sunday, October 9, a Mumbai based rheumatologist is going to help you pay closer attention to your back pain and its patterns. Dr Shashank Akerkar, 38, of Mumbai Arthritis Clinic, Bhandup will get over 600 patients suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) under one roof and make them stand in the form of a pelvic bone. This is Dr Akerkar's attempt to create not just a Guinness World Record but also to raise awareness about the auto-immune disease.
"AS starts as dull ache in the lower back and buttocks and affects people in the age group of 20-30. It progressively gets worse. It is not a lifestyle disease but something that those with a family history are predisposed to," Dr Akerkar said. A form of arthritis, AS affects the joints and can be diagnosed with an MRI. "The disease has the potential to progress and cripple an individual," Dr Akerkar added.
An alarming issue is that most patients neglect the pain as backache and there is a delay in as much as six to seven years in the diagnosis. At the event on Sunday there will be patients coming from places like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi along with their family members and other rheumatologists.
But how does one tell the difference between a normal backache and AS? "AS pain is the worst at night and in the morning but gets progressively better during the day," explained Dr Akerkar.
