Around 50 members living in and around Juhu recently gathered at the Juhu Gandhigram BMC School to meet their elected MLA Ameet Satam, along with officers of the K/West ward and cops from the traffic department. The residents have been facing major problems ranging from illegal hawkers, waste collection, disposing of tree-trimming waste and illegal parking.

‘Temporary’ hawkers

At some places in Juhu, a number of hawkers sell breakfast by the roadside between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. and then leave the place in a complete mess. These ‘temporary’ hawkers leave the roads in a dirty condition with the used plates and the spilt food simply lying there.
A resident present at the meeting pointed out that, “These hawkers have not just made a mess of the place but they have also turned it into a public toilet, as they urinate by the roadside. Moreover, they use abusive language, which makes it a nasty affair.” Residents also pointed out that such hawkers aren’t afraid of the law and carry on their businesses.
In response to the above, Satam explained, “We had a meeting with the new BMC chief, Ajoy Mehta, and he specifically mentioned that there will be no tolerance against hawkers and I will direct officers from the ward to deal with this.”

Traffic and cleanliness

Juhu, being a tourist hub, sees a lot of people coming in tourist buses that are usually parked haphazardly on the roads. In addition to this, vehicles such as heavy tankers, trucks and generator vans are parked illegally in the area. Apart from the fact that this is a parking nuisance, it also creates a cleanliness problem as sweepers from the ward cannot clean these portions of the road.
A senior official from the traffic department, who was present at the meeting, shared, “We’ll certainly look into the matter and get more clampers so that it is easy to get hold of the violators. We will keep a check on Military Road, Chandan Cinema and ISKCON Temple especially during functions, when there is a lot of chaos and traffic, and more so during evenings.”

Tree-trimming waste

Disposal of the tree-trimming waste in JVPD has been a major issue and the residents have been hassled by it, as the ward refuses to pick up this waste. Residents of JVPD discussed the issue with officials of the department from the K/West ward, who have promised to find a solution for it. Satam added, “We all can find solutions for this; we just need to give some time to the officers from BMC and traffic. With a little cooperation and patience, we will be able to achieve good results.”
