The city of Mumbai sees lakhs of travellers daily, especially in South Mumbai where non-locals, especially foreigners, rely largely on signage for directions and moving about in the city. Unfortunately, Mumbai lacks on this front—in fact a few travellers prefer not to venture out late at night as navigating by-lanes without sign boards is truly, an ordeal.

Post the 2012 court order in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had to reluctantly float a tender this February, which included installing 10,000-odd traffic signage around the city.
Makrand Narvekar, Municipal Councillor, Navy Nagar, says, "BMC has allotted 10 crore for the entire project across the city. Speaking of A/ward, around 1,300 signage had to be installed but the work is not happening as it should be. Why doesn't the ward have a plan of action to carry out this work systematically?"

The signage planned by the ward committee should ideally include street name, road name, direction of the way ahead, etc. Other signage like 'no parking', 'school ahead', 'go slow', 'silent zone' have to put up in collaboration with the traffic police in the relevant areas.
Colaba-based activist, Christopher Thomas, says, "These guys have not really done the work properly so it all looks messed up. The ward has installed signage in very few places and we are absolutely unhappy with their performance. It all appears like monkey business to me."
The activists are also complaining that there is no consolidated list that systematically states the places in A/ward, which require signage, leading the activists to demand answers from the ward.

Devidas Kshirsagar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner A/ward, says, "This work has to be done in association with the Traffic and Coordination Department and my ward is cooperating for the same. The department had asked for the information last month, which we did provide. Now we are waiting to hear from them."
