Two senior citizens from Belapur, who allegedly constructed a building on a plot that belonged to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) using fake documents, were arrested by the police on Friday.
According to the police, Narayan Chavan, 70, and his younger brother Natha Chavan, 62, stay with their families at Shahbaz village in Belapur, sector 20. They sought permission from the civic body for constructing a 4-story buiding in the village around three-and-a-half-years ago. They also submitted all the required documents with their application and hence NMMC permitted them to go ahead with the construction.
The Chavans got the building constructed with the help of one builder and then sold a few flats to some other people.
"NMMC however, got to know that the documents that the Chavans had submitted for getting the permission were fake just a few days back. They then approached us and registered a case against the brothers. We arrested them from their residences on Friday," Jagdish Selkar, assistant police inspector from Belapur police station.
The police have booked the suspects under sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 34 of Indian Penal Code. They were produced before the judicial court on Saturday and have been remanded to police custody for five days.
"We are now investigating the case to find out how the Chavans got the documents and the rubber stamps which they used to get the permission. It is still not clear if some more people were involved in the crime," another police officer said.
Sources from Belapur police station told dna of navi mumbai that NMMC has already ordered to demolish the buidling. Therefore, all outsiders who purchased flat in that building, are likely to be homeless.
When asked if the builder, who constructed the building was also involved in the crime, Selkar said, "That angle is also a part of our investigations. But we have not found any evidence against the builder so far."
