The acute scarcity of water in the region is taking a toll on all aspects of life including crops, human health and as it appears even human life. Two labourers were killed while they were digging a well in Yeola tehsil of Nashik district on Wednesday, April 27, 2016.

Two labourers had taken a job of digging a well in Naygavhan shivar, the village area in Yeola tehsil with the area being starved of water. It has become a common practise to dig a well in the farm to meet the water needs as other sources of water like existing wells, rivers are all running dry. The crops are on the verge of collapse in the region of Nashik and so many farmers are resorting to digging of fresh wells. Also it is a common practise to dig a well before the monsoon in anticipation of the rain water filling it up.

According to police, two labourers, namely Patchu Nandaji Gujar and Mahadu Bhilla, both from Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, had taken up the job of digging a well in one of the farms at Naygaon Shivar in Yeola. While they were working, on Wednesday around 7.30 am, the gelatine sticks used to create a blast to dig earth deep below, exploded suddenly, taking the two labourers in the grip of the explosion. The two were rushed to the hospital but they had died on the spot, sources stated.

The police have filed a case of accidental death.

Water scarcity problems are posing in different forms in the region. Earlier this month, a water tanker driver was beaten up by some villagers in Yeola tehsil while he was carrying the water to his own village, a task assigned to him by that gram panchayat. However, as the villagers from another village were also short of water they demanded that the tanker be emptied in their village resulting into throwing off the driver from a moving tanker and beating him up.

Water shortage is becoming very acute in the district and the temperatures soaring high. This summer has posed difficulties for all.
