31-year-old Mitali Kalyanpur, who quit her job with a PR agency 2 years ago to avoid travelling, is quite happy working from home. Now a freelance content writer, Kalyanpurkar is satisfied with the time she gets to spend with her 4-year-old son without compromising on her career.

Kalyanpurkar is one of many people in the city who decided to work from home to skip the daily hassles of daily travel. The content writer, who recently shifted to Mira Road, used to leave her house at 8.30 am to catch a rickshaw to reach the railway station. Her son was just a year old at the time. On some days, she didn’t reach home before 11.30 pm. “It was really tough for me to manage my son’s schedule along with mine. I will not consider a full time job before my son is more independent,” she said.

Working as a solution architect for a software multinational company, Kunal Parekh has been working from home for the past 4 years. The Dadar resident had to travel to Dindoshi to his office. “Working from home saves me from the frustration of travel and lack of desk space in a space-crunched city,” said Parekh who now uses this time to pursue fitness.
Musician Rupmatii Jolly has a similar story. She would spend three and a half hours stuck in highway traffic, which finally made her turn her house into a music studio. “I felt like I was drowning in a sea of cars,” said the stickler for punctuality.

Maverick retailer Kishore Biyani’s Future Group is among a few Indian conglomerates that gives employees flexibility in terms of work timings. The Ajay Piramal promoted Piramal Group, which is into diversified businesses, also offers its employees flexible work hours. The State Bank of India is reportedly studying the feasibility of allowing women employees to work out of home for some functions.
