On the auspicious occasion of Holika Dahan (lighting of holy pyre) on Thursday`residents of Thane came held a one-minute blackout along with a candle march. The act was a mark of their support to Thane municipal commissioner who is being maligned and defamed due to the ongoing tussle between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. As a result, the angry commissioner has asked for a transfer from Thane.

On the evening of March 1, as the sun went down, over 200 Thane housing societies switched off the lights in their homes to show solidarity with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal. The residents reminisced the work done by the commissioner for their betterment and also held a prayer session.

“This is our effort to show our solidarity, give our thanks and appreciation to honourable Sanjeev Jaiswal for all the good he has done for the citizens of Thane and the development of our city,” says Kasber Augustine, president of Thane Citizens Forum (TCF) which had organised this campaign, 'Blackout Hope'. “We also condemn those who defamed him and request him to come back and resume work,” he adds.

TCF is a residents body of Thane which has over 700 big housing societies and complexes in the city. It has initiated many residents campaign successfully like 'No toll before poll,' 'Bird vapasi,' 'Paint the walls,' etc.

Last week when the Thane civic chief abruptly announced in the TMC general body that he wants to quit as he is being targeted by a coterie of corporators, TCF decided to mobilise support to show their solidarity with Jaiswal.

The residents have pledged that this will be an ongoing campaign until Jaiswal joins work and is given an extension of tenure as civic chief in Thane. “We also plan to meet Thane’s guardian minister Eknath Shinde and our chief minister Devendra Fadnavis requesting them to give a special extension to Jaiswal at least for a year till he finishes the projects he initiated for the city,” says Augustine.
