In a suspected case of suicide, Amit Bhatia, director (operations), Mohan Group of Developers, was found lying on the railway tracks between Ambernath and Badlapur stations around 1 am on Sunday.
He was hit by the Kolkata-bound Duronto Express. Though the GRP took him to the Ulhasnagar central hospital, he was declared dead on arrival.
The incident comes months after the suicide of another Thane-based builder Suraj Parmar.
Bhatia's body was later identified by family members. According to GRP officials, there were multiple injuries on his body. Bhatia's uncle's statement has been recorded and a case of accidental death has been registered.
A police official from Kalyan GRP said: "We are suspecting a case of suicide. Family members' statements have not been taken as they are in trauma. We are clueless as to what he was doing near the railway tracks that late."
Central Railway DCP Rupali Ambure said: "We are treading cautiously in our probe since it's a high- profile case involving a builder."
