A few days before the 70th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, 68 jail inmates, including seven female inmates, from Thane Central Jail appeared for the Gandhi Peace Exam conducted by the Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal.

Those who passed the exam were given khadi clothes while all the prisoners received certificates of participation from senior jail staff.

"The topper got 67 marks out of 80. The exam is part of a reformation programme and a regular activity by the Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal to evoke a sense of regret in the minds of prisoners by inculcating Gandhian moral values, peace, truth and non-violence among them," said TRK Somaiya, from the Mandal. "Mahatma Gandhi believed in 'change of heart' and while inculcating his ideology among the prisoners, it is essential to help them bring about a change of heart. Those who commit crimes in a moment of fury are neglected by society and they are forced to enter the world of crime. We must help make them, even if they are jail inmates, responsible citizens," he added.

The Mandal has been organising the exam for the past 13 years and as per them, thousands of jail inmates have decided to follow the path of truth and non-violence after reading Gandhi's books and appearing for the exam. Many of them started a new life of a responsible citizen after their release from jail.

"Following the exam, some of the feedback received from jail inmates was that a matter cannot be solved with violence and that non-violence should be adopted. Gandhi Peace Exam is the best way to mould the life of a person who accepts to practice the method of speaking the truth. The inmates also stated that the said exam should be organised in schools and colleges," said another official from the Mandal.
