Daughter of Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde Praniti (in pic), a Solapur MLA, registered her protest in the legislative assembly against the treatment meted out to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in the United States. She condemned the incident and members of the Opposition parties, cutting across party lines, supported her. However, a formal resolution was not passed in the assembly.
Later, she even informed the House that the youth forum of MLAs and MLCs, cutting across party lines, has refused to meet a 10-member delegation of the American Counsel for Young Political Leader (ACYPL), who was to visit the legislature premises in the morning.
Members of the ACYPL, who are also members of the House of Representatives, and office-bearers of political parties were visiting Nagpur as part of a programme organised in consultation with the youth forum of MLAs and MLCs of Maharashtra. The members of the ACYPL wanted to witness the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature and were here as part of the programme scheduled two and a half months ago.
“Everything was decided much earlier and they arrived last night. However, members of the forum decided to register their protest with the visiting delegation and, hence, informed them that they won’t be able to meet or entertain them,” said a forum member.
“How could we meet them? Devyani is a Maharashtrian and the treatment meted out to her by the US authorities was really bad... we had to register our protest and were in no mood to entertain them,” the forum member added.
