"Late in the night, I heard a thud and noticed the walls were shaking. I heard the cracking sound and held on to my daughter's hand. Within seconds, the ceiling came crashing down on us," said Amit Khot, the only surviving member of the family.

Anaya, his five-year-old daughter who had celebrated her birthday on Sunday, was one of the 12 who died in the crash.

"It was my late mother's house, which we had vacated a few years ago. But for Anaya's birthday, we visited the place for two days," Khot added. He said he could hear his daughter's cries for nearly 20 minutes but was helpless. Khot was rescued after two hours and has suffered leg injury.

An eyewitness, Dattatraya Chauhan, a resident of the adjacent Ganesh Darshan building, said, "I heard the noise and, as our building is also in a dilapidated state, I rushed outside with my family. I realised that the neighbouring building had collapsed. We informed corporator Sanjay Waghole."

Among the victims was the Bhatt family from second floor. Just two months ago, the Bhatts had celebrated the wedding of their elder daughter Rashmi, who was to travel abroad in a couple of days. Rashmi had come to visit her parents, grandfather and younger sister on Tuesday night. None of them survived. Rashmi's husband was in Ahmedabad at the time of the incident.

Another casualty was 14-year-old Priya Patel. Her family, however, survived.

"As the building tilted left and collapsed, there was some space on the right. The Patel family had huddled together and Amrutlal Patel was holding on to everyone. When a slab fell on his hand, he lost grip on his daughter's hand," said Sanjay More, mayor, TMC.

Chauhan said, "Although the building was very old, it was not in a dilapidated state. Kamlaji Bhuvan building, which is adjacent to Krishna Niwas, had been evacuated and razed. This could have affected Krishna Niwas as huge drillers were used to raze the building."

During the rescue operation, a cat and a pigeon were rescued. They did not suffer major injury in spite of being trapped in the rubble for hours.
