After the success of two consecutive exhibitions, a third exhibition with the theme 'As it happens', a part of the 'Museum on Wheels' project, an initiative by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) to bring the experience of a museum to city-based schools began this week.

As opposed to students visiting a museum to learn about history and culture, the concept of a museum on wheels reaches different schools every day to teach students through a display of artifacts. The third exhibition kicked off from Colaba BMC School, where students from classes 4 to 10 took a tour to see the artifacts on display. The first such exhibition was held in 2016, followed by a second exhibition earlier this year.

Principal Bhagwan Dhusara, of Colaba BMC school, said, "Through this concept, all students can visit the museum on the school premises. This cuts down the travelling cost. The display helps students gain insight into the topics they have been reading in their textbooks. Rather than displaying it for one day, the number of exhibition days in schools should be increased which will help students learn more."

In the third exhibition, the organisation displayed replicas of manuscripts, newspapers published during the independence period, Mauryan king Ashoka era's inscriptions, and the emergence of coins to name a few.

Speaking about the concept, Bilwa Kulkarni, Education Officer, CSMVS, said, "We change the exhibition theme every six months. We have observed that students have started thinking and cross-questioning about topics that are part of their history textbooks. We keep the exhibition interactive and narrative. Before choosing the theme, we also conduct surveys and ask teachers and principals for suggestions regarding relevant topics that can be displayed."

Shahin Dastur, Head of Corporate Citizenship, Citi India, said, "It was extraordinary to see the manner in which the exhibit sparked curiosity amongst the children."
