A 27-year-old model from Houston in Texas, USA was left stranded in the city after her father allegedly tore her passport and Green Card as he is against her modelling and acting career and believes it is not befitting their caste. However, Shital Patil managed to get a new passport in record time and will fly back to Texas soon.
Patil, originally from Ambad in Nashik, migrated to Houston in Texas when she was 19. The mother of two is already embroiled in a legal battle with her husband after he allegedly refused to support her career choice.
"I came to India on February 7 as my mother was ill but then I got an urgent modelling assignment in Texas," said Patil. "On February 13, my father destroyed my passport and Green Card in a bid to make me stay. I tried seeking help from government agencies online to get a new passport."
Patil tweeted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, the passport office, Mumbai police and Nashik police seeking their help. The Mumbai police got in touch with Patil to understand the problem. The message was further forwarded to the Nashik police who cleared the verification process. The passport was printed and disptached to the postal services department in a span of four hours.
Her father, Ravindra Patil, denied that he opposed her career. "I tore the passport out of anger," he said. "We want her to come back and live with us but she wants to live in Texas."
Madhukar Kad, Senior Inspector, Ambad police station, said, "We have lodged a case under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. We immediately completed the new passport verification procedure and forwarded it for clearance to the passport office in Mumbai."
