The Esplanade court has remanded Ramchandra Chikle, who was arrested by the Cuffe Parade police on Wednesday, to police custody till October 3.
Chikle, an acting professor of a Solapur-based college, was arrested for the abetment of the suicide of Rupali Andhare, the woman he had an extra-marital affair with.
Andhare, a Solapur resident, met Chikle when they were teaching at the same college for a brief period. They continued their affair for around seven months before Andhare ended her life in a room at the Manora MLA’s Hostel in Cuffe Parade on September 14, where her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan.
Chikle had promised he would leave his wife and marry her but later went back on it. He had fled soon after learning that Andhare had committed suicide but was later arrested from Solapur. He had turned off his mobile phone as well.
Senior inspector Janardhar Kharat said Chikle had accompanied the victim to the hostel the day she committed suicide. He had made an entry in the hostel register. The police had been searching for Chikle and had sent a team to Solapur to nab him after receiving a tip off.
