Sex-workers die trying to escape cops at Grant Road

Two commercial sex-workers died while trying to escape the police at Grant Road on Wednesday. DB Marg police officers conducted a surprise raid late on Tuesday night at a commercial sex establishment.

The two women — aged 50 and 30 – jumped from Om Niwas building, where they lived. Both hailed from West Bengal.

While the elder woman died on the spot, the younger one died during treatment at J J Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Their bodies were handed over to their family's.

Om Niwas building at Lamington Road in Grant Road East is notorious as a prostitution and gambling den. It houses both residential and commercial establishments. Senior inspector Pandurang Shinde of DB Marg police station said, "Our team conducted a routine check in the locality to crack down on prostitution dens. The incident took place after our officers left the spot."

Cops have registered a case of accidental death.

Priti Patkar, co-founder and director of Prerana, an organisation that works for upliftment of sex workers, said, "Police agencies should take sex workers into confidence during a rescue."
