Scarp dealers caught stealing

Scrap dealers were making most of the situation as they sneaked in the premises of Bhim Nagar slums in Damu Nagar where the fire raged through over 2,000 shanties.

On Tuesday morning, scrap dealers were caught picking metals sheets, utensils and other useful household materials from the area. Local youths spotted a few scrap dealers and gave them a sound thrashing before they ran away.

Pandurang Ghadekar, a 75-year-old resident of the area, said that last night youths caught hold of scrap dealers who were suspiciously picking up things. "When they realised that they are not a resident of Damu Nagar, they questioned them. It was found that they had come to the spot to make some easy money. They wanted to steal whatever was left behind. How can anyone do this. The youths took care of them and now we all are vigilant," said Ghadekar.

"We are keeping an eye on everyone. We have young girls in the area and people are so vulnerable. Group of youngsters are constantly moving with watchful eyes to avoid any untoward incident," said Rahim Shaikh.

On being asked about the incident, DS Yadav, senior police inspector from Samta Nagar police station, said: "We have secured a place and there are around 100 men who have been put on duty. We have also deployed 40 women constable at the site."
