BMC on Friday announced a compensation of Rs15 lakh to the kin of fireman Nitin Ivalekar. Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte made the announcement regarding the compensation to be offered to the 34-year-old.

"We are a part of his family's grief. Apart from offering compensation, we will see how the family members can be rehabilitated," Kunte told reporters.

According to senior officers who worked with Ivalekar, he was a dedicated staffer who cared less about his own life. "He would always be at the forefront during rescue operations. We are deeply hurt to see this day," an officer said.

Ivalekar is survived by his mother, brother, sister, wife and two daughters, youngest of whom is just six months old.

"His demise has been a huge shock. His colleagues, who had gone to Virar to convey the sad news to his family, found it difficult to tell the relatives. They were hesitant and stood outside his home for half an hour," another officer said.
