The state government has announced a cash reward of Rs 5lakh to a team of 28 crime branch policemen for solving a case involving five people who had robbed Rs 6.49cr-worth diamonds from a vehicle in Borivli last May.

According to the police, on May 9, four people of a security company were on their way in a van to deliver a consignment of diamonds worth Rs 6.49cr from Surat to the office of a company in BKC. "Around 4.15pm, the driver stopped the vehicle near the national park in an area under the jurisdiction of Kasturba Marg police station. Five unknown people then attacked the van's occupants with pistols and chopper, took the van and drove away towards Vrajreshwari Road," said a crime branch officer.

Kasturba Marg police registered a case and the crime branch also began a probe into the incident. Soon, the Dahisar unit of the crime branch made a breakthrough and arrested the accused and recovered Rs 5.65cr-worth diamond pendants from them and also seized the weapons and the vehicle used in the crime.

"The government has decided to give Rs 5lakh to 28 policemen involved in solving the case," said a home department official.

Some of the officers who will share the reward are assistant police commissioner Praful Bhosale, inspectors Milind Khetle, Ashok Khot, Sandeep Vishwasrao, Anil Dhole and Vijay Kandadgaonkar.
