‘Hum tak nahi aaye, isliye hum nahi bolenge. It doesn’t work like that,’ said a college student from Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) while over 100 students were discussing about the Ramjas College incident in Delhi.

Four days after the attack on Delhi’s Ramjas college students, a students' body in Mumbai-based TISS organised a peaceful discussion in the college campus to show their support to the Delhi students against the violence by the ABVP group.

The students have decided to organise a peaceful march by involving other institutes from Mumbai along with Mumbai university soon.

On February 21 and 22, a two-day conference on ‘Culture of Protest: A Seminar Exploring Representations of Dissent’ was organised by Ramjas College’s English department for which Umar Khalid was invited as a guest speaker. However, a group of ABVP students took a strong stand of not allowing ‘anti-national’ elements speak inside the campus which resulted in unmitigated violence.

During the discussion, students from TISS read out messages they received from their friends studying in Delhi University and decided to come up and express their view in public. “One of my classmate was talking about how her friends in Delhi faced the violence. So we thought of asking the student union from the institute to take up the topic since they represent us and this incident could happen with us too,” Amrita Howlader, student of Women Science department from TISS.

According to the TISS students, the incident shows that the ABVP students are against anyone who is in disagreement with them. They have seen the conference as a problem, not Khalid and just chose him as an excuse for disruption.

“As students we condemn this violence on our fellow students in Delhi University. We stand by them and support them. We cannot allow this to go on and it is necessary to address this issue and demand for strict action against the perpetrators,” said Amrita Howlader, student from TISS.

Rahul Adwani, president of TISS student union added, “It is not just about DU, it happens in every college. Their motivation was to crush all forms of platforms that speak against the government. We will be finalizing the dates after discussing it with Mumbai University. The protest will also be highlighted on social media. The aim is to speak and share our opinion outside in public and not just restrict it inside a college campus.

ABVP protest:

On the other side, the ABVP group will be organising a protest in support of the Delhi based ABVP group in Mumbai University’s Kalina campus on February 25, Saturday. According to the ABVP group they will be protesting against the Anti-India propaganda of the communist brigade in DU.
