Mumbaikars have been a harrowed lot this year too as the BMC managed to fill potholes only on 500 km of city roads. While there wasn't any casualty due to potholes this year, lakhs of citizens bore the brunt of pothole ridden roads once again.

Though the BMC spends close to Rs 2,000 crore every year on road work, the condition of the roads are far from smooth. With the onset of monsoons in June, deep crevices formed on almost every stretch of city roads.

Since the BMC pulled back apps through which citizens could file pothole complaints, the exact number remains unknown. However, as per the affidavit filed by the BMC in the High Court, the civic body attended to 91% of the complaints received till July 31. Though the BMC claims it received only 1,642 pothole complains, citizens and activists don't agree to the numbers.

Meera Kamat, a social worker, had counted and photographed 701 potholes in parts of Borivali alone between July 25 and 28. The Assistant Commissioner of R Central ward claimed there were only eight to 10 potholes across Borivali.

Navin Lade, another activist, started the website www.mumbaipotholes.com to record the number of potholes. He launched the campaign on July 17 and claimed to have collected more than 27,000 photos of potholes across the metro city.

BMC had adopted new technology to use cold mix this year to deal with the pothole menace, but got a mixed response from its own corporators. Asif Zakeria, Congress Corporator from Bandra blamed cold mix for the sorry state of roads near Mehboob studio. Road engineers also used banned paver blocks to fill potholes, the corporator said.
