The state government is likely appoint a special public prosecutor (SPP) to represent the police in the Pratyusha Banerjee's suicide case. Earlier Pratyusha's parents had requested the government to appoint an SPP in the case. Meanwhile, the High Court, on Monday, adjourned the hearing of anticipatory bail plea of Pratyusha's boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh till April 25.

Public prosecutor, Usha Kejriwal told justice Mridula Bhatkar that Pratyusha's parents had filed an application with the government as well as the home department to appoint an SPP for them. Also, the court should give some more time so that the accused can record his statements properly with the police.

Kejriwal, however, put forward some allegations on Singh stating that “The accused is not cooperating in the police investigations and the information given by the accused is not sufficient enough.” While seeking more time from the court, Kejriwal requested the court to keep the conditions of the interim relief same as it was before.

Justice Bhatkar extended the interim relief of Singh and instructed him to attend Bangur Nagar police station till April 23 between 11am and 1pm.

On April 16, Pratyusha's parents had written a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar and state home minister Ranjit Patil requesting crime branch probe into the case as they suspected that Pratyusha could have been murdered.

Meanwhile, advocate Falguni Brahmbhatt, who was till now representing Soma Banerjee in the case, has stepped out from the case. “My client was not satisfied with investigation done by the local police and was demanding for a special public prosecutor. If the state is planning to appoint a public prosecutor, then my role as a private counsel comes to an end and I have absolutely no grudges with my client,” she said.

Interstingly, Singh's previous defence lawyer, Neeraj Gupta had also backed off from the case when Singh was admitted to the hospital. According to Gupta, Singh was not sharing necessary information which was crucial to prove him innocent in the court.
