As victims of the Powai high-rise fire are slowly getting back to routine life, residential groups have come together to collect money to help families of those who lost their lives while saving the Lake Lucerne building residents.

Among the seven people killed on Saturday's fire, five were non-residents who lent a helping hand in the rescue operations.

Radhika Ichhpuniani, a society member who has volunteered to spearhead the collection drive, said, "We are collecting money as these people were the only breadwinners of their families."

The residents have formed social networking groups to spread awareness and collect as much money as they can to help the families of the deceased.

Watchman Hiralal Gupta (35), electricians Ankush Sutar (40) and Pradeep Sarkar (20), driver Babu Lohar (25) and social worker Taufiq Sheikh lost their lives while trying to help residents escape the fire.

The Powai Women's Association has called upon the residents of Lake Lucerne Housing Society to donate money. The collected donations will be part of a pool of funds that will be distributed among the families of these five heroes.

Apart from helping the families of the deceased, the residential associations are also helping the people who lost their houses in the fire. In one of the social networking site posts, the committee members have been requested to give information on rental accommodation for one month. According to the post, the B-wing will get electricity connection in 15 days and till then the families need alternative accommodation. There's a need for 20-25 apartments.

Thirteen people were admitted in Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital after the fire. Out of these, one is still on ventilator. He has been identified as Sanjay Soni.

"Soni's condition is slowly improving," said Lacchman Rijhwani. "He is still on the ventilator and is not well enough to communicate. But he is getting better now," he added.

Two members of the Rijhwani family — Rachana Bhatia and Diya Lalchandani — are still in hospital. They are Rijhwani's grandaughters.
