The Western Railway’s Rs30-crore plan of mid-town terminus to decongest the ever-crowded Dadar station is now slowly taking shape with the new elevated station premise with escalators slowly shaping up in its backyard and in advanced stages of construction.

“It’s an ambitious project and elevated deck is half-way through. The entire premise will be up parallel to the Tilak Bridge up above and commuters on the foot overbridge will be able to catch cabs at the first floor level itself,” a WR official said.

The new “mid-town’’ terminus will later also be the hub of the new 12-car and 15-car suburban trains that are planned to be introduced in the coming years. The new layout will change WR’s Dadar station once and for all.

“The space below the elevated deck will be used to carry additional tracks to connect Mumbai Central station, thus increasing the capacity of stations as the separate tracks would then be dedicated for outstation trains, segregating outstation trains. This will give us more space for trains and passengers,’’ he added.

Once ready, the new premise will offer entry and parking facilities for vehicles from the Tilak Bridge itself and one will not have to pass through narrow alleys and bridges to access the station. “In fact, the space between Matunga Road and Dadar station will be a hub of activity in the next few years,’’ he added.

There are a number of foot overbridges too planned to connect the Tulsi Pipe Road directly so accessing the new station would not be a problem. Right now platforms five and six caters to a few outstation trains, local trains terminating at Dadar and the long 15-car suburban train.
