A 44-year-old physician from Nerul, who allegedly molested one of his patients inside his clinic, was arrested by the police on Thursday.

According to the police, the 23-year-old-victim, a resident of Nerul, had been down with common cold for the past few days. On Wednesday evening, she went to consult Dr Sambaji Tike, the accused, at his clinic in Juinagar and was accompanied by one of her friends. She entered Tike's cabin alone and her friend was waiting in the receptionist's room.

"Despite the victim's reluctance, Tike virtually forced her to take an injection after examining her. On the pretext of giving her an injection, he allegedly touched the victim's private parts, outraging her modesty. After committing the crime, he asked the victim not to reveal it to anyone else," said Sachin Hire, assistant police inspector from Nerul police station.

On reaching home, the victim narrated the entire episode to her parents. Following a complaint registered by the victim's parents, the police arrested Tike from his residence on Friday evening.

The police have booked the accused under sections 354 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the judicial court on Friday afternoon. The police have not found any criminal record of the accused.

The Navi Mumbai police registered many similar cases in the past, wherein female patients were either molested or raped by doctors during medical check-ups. In one such incident in October 2010, a 30-year-old woman from Ghansoli was raped by a doctor in the ICU of a Vashi hospital.

Amarja Chavan, general secretary of the Navi Mumbai Swayamsevi Samanvay Sanstha (NMSSS) said, "Every doctor must keep a nurse in his cabin while examining a female patient, regardless of the patient's age group . We also suggest the women to take one of their family members or friends while visiting a doctor. We have been teaching women martial arts and judo-karate so they can handle such situations on their own for last several years."
