P Chidambaram files nomination for RS seat from Maha

Formal announcement on their election will be made on June 3, the last date of withdrawal of nominations, said a senior Vidhan Bhawan official.

Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra on Tuesday.

They are among the six candidates in the fray for as many vacancies in the Upper House from the state. Former Union minister Praful Patel (NCP), BJP's Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Vikas Mahatme and Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut have also filed their papers. The scrutiny of the papers will be held on Wednesday.

Accompanied by former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, MPCC president Ashok Chavan, former Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and other party leaders, Chidambaram filed the papers at the Vidhan Bhawan. His son Karti Chidambaram was also present.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Narayan Rane also filed his nomination papers for a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Criticising the state government for its failure on all accounts, Rane said Khadse needed to resign immediately, as he was facing allegations every other day.

Money matters

Narayan Rane's total declared wealth in the election affidavit, including movable and immovable assets, comes to be around Rs73 crore, while P Chidambaram owns nearly Rs96 crore. As far as movable property is concerned, Rane's possessions are worth Rs7.45 crore, while his wife, richer than him, has movable property worth Rs19.38 crore. Rane immovable property is worth Rs2.22 crore, while his wife has immovable property worth Rs20.96 crore. P Chidambaram, on the contrary, is richer than his wife in terms of movable property. Chidambaram has movable property worth Rs42.95 crore, while his wife has property worth Rs11.23 crore. Chidambaram's has immovable property worth Rs4.25 crore, while his wife is richer than him with immovable property worth Rs25.03 crore in her possession.
