Faced with higher maintenance costs and complaints of non-functional, NMMC has decided not to install new water fountains in the city. It has also taken up the responsibility of repairing the existing ones only if the costs are affordable.
Sanjay Desai, a member of Tree Authority, in response to a question by corporator Shubhangi Sakpal, wanted to know when NMMC plans to make fountains in sectors 14, 22 and 23 of Koparkhairane gardens functional.
Desai said, “It has been our experience that water fountains — be it in garden or at any major junction — work fine for two to three months, but start giving problems later. The maintenance and repair costs are high and so NMMC has decided not to install new fountains. It will repair those fountains where minimum costs are involved.”
Civic chief Abasahed Jarhad seconded Desai, said, “We will beautify the area where water fountains are presently installed.”
NMMC had fitted water fountains in sector 14 garden four years ago; water fountains in sector 22 and 23 gardens were fitted three years ago. However, these fountains have still not been made operational till date.
