Backing chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the proposed special committee under prime minister Narendra Modi to oversee Mumbai's development would help sort out vexed issues the city was facing.

Gadkari also lauded the Maharashtra cabinet saying: "The chief minister and his entire team are good; no minister has his hand tied, something that help them clear files fast. There is double engines functioning in the governments at the centre and in the state, which would result in hurdles in the way of development being removed, helping speedy development."

To a question during his press conference at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Mumbai, Gadkari said Mumbai was not only the financial capital of the country, but also one of the most important cities in the world. He said whatever the CM had said was with due consideration, and had a thought process behind it. He said the proposed special committee under the chairmanship of the prime minister would give a fillip to projects in Mumbai, and help remove the hurdles facing projects pending for long with the centre.

NCP president Sharad Pawar had criticised Fadnavis for his statement on appointing a committee under the prime minister for speedy disposal of projects pertaining to Mumbai. Pawar had written a letter in this regard to the prime minister. Modi has neither made any public comment on it nor reacted to it during any of the meetings so far. The CM has made his stand on this clear by reiterating the need for such committee, however.

Expressing confidence that Maharashtra would receive, in the next two years, help which it had not got in the last ten years, Gadkari said city infrastructure had reached its limit and issues of Mumbai were complex, including travelling in local trains, which was becoming more difficult day by day. He said the BJP government aimed to make Mumbai free of traffic jams and water and air pollution.
